Overview

Langtang Helambu and Gosaikunda trek is located in the northern part of Kathmandu and just on the southern border of Tibet. The trek offers beautiful scenes of Tamang village and also Sherpa village in Helambu. The trek follows the river upstream through pine forests, bamboo, and rhododendrons. Ascending through high pastures, we arrive at the meadows of Kyanjin Gompa.

The trail of Gosaikunda climbs steep up through farmlands and reaches alpine ridges. The ridge offers panoramic views of huge Himalayas and reaches sacred lakes at high altitudes, namely Gosaikunda, Saraswatikunda, and Bhairabkunda Lakes. We also get to see glaciers and high mountains of the Langtang mountain range.

Gosaikunda Lake is at an altitude of 4300m. Every year thousands of pilgrims visit the lake, especially in the full moon of August. This is also a lake revered by Buddhists. According to Hindu mythology, the other two lakes were formed by Lord Shiva with his Trishul (trident) by digging earth to get water. These lakes are the main source of Trishuli River.

Helambu Valley is popular for its natural beauty and climates. Though it lacks mountain views of Langtang, Helambu is a fine winter culture trek. Langtang valley and Gosaikunda trek does not require special permits or flights, so logistically it is easy. Further, it is a preferred teahouse trek as it is not as busy and crowded as other trekking regions like Annapurna and Everest.
